Bhrigu: The Wish-Born Sage and Divine Observer
Bhrigu, one of the revered SaptaRishis or seven great sages, holds a unique place in Hindu mythology. In some traditions, Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and the divine consort of Lord Vishnu, is also said to be his daughter, which would make Bhrigu an esteemed progenitor of one of the most worshiped goddesses in Hinduism.
Bhrigu’s lineage also includes his remarkable son, Shukra, known for his wisdom and expertise as the preceptor of the Asuras (demons) and for his mastery over the art of reviving the dead (Mrita Sanjeevani). Another son attributed to him is the sage Chyavana, renowned for his penance and his association with Chyawanprash, a traditional Ayurvedic health supplement named after him. He first visits Brahma, who is also his father. When Brahma learns of Bhrigu’s purpose, he attempts to impress the sage with his grandeur. But Bhrigu is left unsatisfied and next approaches Shiva, who similarly tries to demonstrate his supremacy, though again failing to provide the answer Bhrigu seeks.
Finally, Bhrigu arrives at Vaikunta, the heavenly abode of Vishnu, where he finds the god in deep slumber. Irritated that Vishnu would dare sleep rather than receive him, Bhrigu kicks Vishnu on the chest to wake him. Vishnu immediately awakens, apologizes for his unawareness, and tenderly presses Bhrigu’s feet, expressing concern for the sage’s foot, which may have been hurt by the force of the kick. Vishnu’s humility and genuine concern for his well-being fill Bhrigu with awe, and he realizes that true greatness lies not in power alone but in compassion and humility. Through this act, Bhrigu determines that Vishnu embodies the highest qualities among the trinity.
Bhrigu’s Curse and Vishnu’s Chest Mark
It is said that Bhrigu’s kick left an imprint on Vishnu’s chest, marking him forever. This mark is known as the Srivatsa, and it has come to symbolize the compassionate nature of Vishnu. Bhrigu’s encounter with Vishnu is significant as it exemplifies divine humility and sets an example of how spiritual insight often surpasses sheer power.
