The Bhavishya Purana is one of the eighteen major Puranas in Hinduism, known for its unique focus on prophecies and future events. The name “Bhavishya” itself means “future,” indicating that this Purana is primarily concerned with foretelling future happenings, as well as offering historical accounts and teachings that are believed to be relevant for the future ages. Like other Puranas, it also addresses religious practices, mythology, and moral conduct, but its emphasis on predictions sets it apart from the others. Its emphasis on prophecy and detailed eschatological visions makes it a compelling counterpart to other significant texts like the Agni Purana, which blends ritual guidance with practical knowledge across disciplines.

Content and Structure

The Bhavishya Purana is divided into four main sections (Khandas), each covering a range of topics, from mythology to future prophecies. These sections are:

  1. Brahma – The Creator Parva: This section covers the creation of the universe and various mythological stories associated with the gods, especially Brahma, Vishnu – The Protector, and Shiva – The Destroyer. The stories found here often intersect with narratives preserved in texts such as the Brahmavaivarta Purana, which also explores themes of creation and divine activity. It also includes instructions on religious rituals and the worship of different deities.
  2. Madhyama Parva: This section focuses on religious practices, ethical conduct, and the duties of different castes and stages of life (varna and ashrama). It provides detailed guidance on performing rites and rituals, and discusses the importance of festivals, fasts, and pilgrimages.
  3. Pratisarga Parva: This is one of the most important sections of the Bhavishya Purana, as it deals with the foretelling of future events. It provides predictions related to the various ages (yugas) and includes prophecies about the rise and fall of empires, kings, and significant events in world history. Some interpretations of this section even claim that it contains references to modern historical figures and occurrences.
  4. Uttara – The Wife of Abhimanyu Parva: The final section focuses on rituals, rites, and moral teachings. It includes descriptions of how certain sacrifices and offerings should be performed and outlines the significance of observing specific vratas (vows) and tirthas (pilgrimages).
