Vibhishana, also known as Vibhishana Rishi, was the younger brother of Ravana, the king of Lanka, and the son of the Brahmana sage Vishrava and the Asura woman Kaikasi. He was the brother of Kumbhakarna and the only sister of Shurpanakha. Vibhishana was known for his rectitude and his unswerving determination to tread the path of virtue, which set him apart from his brothers and sister.
Vibhishana was a complex character, who was deeply troubled by his brother Ravana’s actions, particularly his kidnapping of Sita, the wife of Rama. Despite his efforts to convince Ravana to return Sita, Vibhishana was unsuccessful, and he was forced to leave Lanka and join the army of Rama. Vibhishana’s decision to join Rama’s army was motivated by his desire to do what was right and to uphold the principles of virtue.
During the war between Rama and Ravana, Vibhishana played a major role in the victory of Rama, assisting him in countering the magical warfare employed by the Rakshasas. His knowledge of the magical arts and his understanding of the Rakshasas’ tactics proved to be invaluable to Rama’s army.
After Ravana’s death, Vibhishana was installed on the throne of Lanka by Rama, which was a significant event in the history of Lanka. However, Vibhishana’s decision to assist the enemy of his clan to defeat his kinsmen has been widely criticized, and he is often denounced as the biggest traitor ever. Despite his devotion to virtue, Vibhishana’s character has been unfavorably compared to that of his brother Kumbhakarna, who was loyal to Ravana till the very end and perished in defending his homeland.
