Sage Lomasa: The Immortal Devotee of Vishnu – The Protector

Sage Lomasa, also known as Romasa, is celebrated in Hindu mythology for his unwavering devotion to Lord Vishnu and the extraordinary boon that granted him a lifespan beyond imagination. His story is one of deep spiritual dedication and the profound blessings that come from such devotion.

Devotion to Vishnu and Desire for Eternal Worship

Lomasa was a sage who dedicated his entire life to the worship of Lord Vishnu. His devotion was so intense that he spent every moment in contemplation and service of the Lord. However, as he grew older, Lomasa became concerned that the time he had on earth was insufficient to fully indulge in the bliss of worshiping Vishnu. Fearing that his lifespan was too brief, Lomasa decided to perform a severe penance to gain more time to devote to his beloved deity.

The Boon from Lord Vishnu

Pleased with Lomasa’s deep devotion and rigorous penance, Lord Vishnu appeared before him and offered to grant him a boon. Lomasa asked for a long life so that he could continue to worship Vishnu without the fear of his time on earth running out. Vishnu, recognizing both the sincerity of Lomasa’s request and an opportunity to teach a lesson to the creator god Brahma – The Creator, granted an extraordinary boon.

Vishnu told Lomasa, “Each time the reign of one Brahma completes, you will shed one hair on your body. You will live as long as you have hair left on your body, allowing you to indulge in your heart’s desire of devotion to me.”

This boon not only granted Lomasa an exceedingly long lifespan-practically making him immortal-but also served to humble Brahma, whose lifespan is equivalent to 3 x 10¹⁴ years. Vishnu, by granting such an immense lifespan to Lomasa, reminded Brahma of the relative nature of time and the greater cosmic order.

Longevity and Immortality

The boon granted to Lomasa means that he sheds one hair only after the entire lifespan of a Brahma has passed. Given that Lomasa would live until all the hairs on his body had fallen out, he was effectively granted an almost endless life. This incredible lifespan allowed Lomasa to continue his worship and service to Vishnu for aeons, making him one of the most enduring figures in Hindu mythology.

Some traditions even suggest that Lomasa’s name, “Romasa,” is derived from the Sanskrit word Roma, meaning “hair,” symbolizing the unique nature of his longevity. As a result, Lomasa is often regarded as practically immortal, with a lifespan that spans multiple cosmic cycles.

Appearances in the Mahabharata – The Great Epic

Sage Lomasa also appears in the Mahabharata, where he serves as a guide and advisor to the Pandavas during their exile. His vast knowledge and experience, accumulated over countless ages, make him a wise and revered figure who provides crucial counsel during their trials.
