 Vamana

Bali, the son of Prahlada, gained powerful boons and conquered the three worlds. To restore the Devas to their rightful place, Vishnu – The Protector incarnated as Vamana, a dwarf. Vamana was born to Aditi – Mother of the Devas and sage Kashyapa – Father of the Devas and Asuras.

Vamana approached Bali during a significant sacrificial ceremony. In line with tradition, alms were offered to Brahmanas during such events. Despite his mentor Shukra’s warning that Vamana was Vishnu in disguise, Bali generously offered to grant any wish. Vamana requested land that he could cover in three steps. Bali agreed.

To everyone’s surprise, Vamana grew into a giant. With his first two steps, he measured the earth and the heavens. When he asked where to place his third step, Bali humbly offered his head. Impressed by Bali’s humility, Vamana placed his foot on Bali’s head and granted him dominion over the underworld while restoring the heavens to Indra – The King of Heaven.

This tale highlights Vamana’s wisdom and Bali’s humility. Vamana is also known as Trivikrama, meaning “the one who covered the three worlds in three steps.” This story showcases the themes of devotion, sacrifice, and divine justice in Indian mythology.
